“Increasing Value of EAM Tied to Competitive Pressures”

Tom Terfehr, VP of Reliability & Maintenance Management

As published in BIC Magazine, March 2013.

There has been an increased value placed on enterprise asset management (EAM) in asset intensive organizations within the government and industrial sectors. The strategic shift can be linked to global competition and a relentless focus on serving customers at the lowest possible competitive cost. These competitive pressures began more than two decades ago and have been steadily making their way through the asset intensive sectors.

The nature of competition is different, but the need to be more reliable at a lower cost is the same in every sector. For example, pharmaceuticals face competition from generics. Oil and gas and petrochemicals firms now compete with increasing sources of supply in countries anxious to generate revenue by selling to global customers. Power generation is under pressure from regulators and customers to produce very reliable supply at the lowest cost. EAM in capital intensive sectors is a major opportunity for improving equipment availability, operating performance, and financial and overall business results.

Asset Criticality Ranking: An EAM Best Practices Webinar

Wednesday, May 22, 2013 - 11am ET / 10am CT

ABS Consulting & GenesisSolutions are hosting a one hour webinar on Asset Criticality Ranking: A Best Practices Overview on Wednesday, May 22, 2013 at 11am ET, 10am CT.

The philosophy of improving the performance of critical assets is common knowledge when it comes to asset management. However, many organizations fail to fully understand the methodology behind formally ranking an asset as critical. It is very easy to deem the assets that are causing the most problems over a window of recent performance as critical as we often operate in a “what have you done for me lately” mentality. Through proper development of an Asset Criticality Ranking model, Reliability Engineering concepts can be applied to determine at what level each asset should be managed based on criticality. This is why Asset Criticality Ranking is a key component to achieving Enterprise Asset Management as it is the primary mechanism needed to prioritize improvement activities when time and resource availability are often limited. This prioritization should be applied to Continuous Improvement efforts such as PM Optimization and Capital Investments as well as to the daily management of the CMMS Workflow Process to set priority for Planning and Scheduling.

This webinar presentation will demonstrate and facilitate a discussion on:

Key Principles of Asset Criticality Ranking

Requirements for Asset Criticality Ranking Execution

Realizable Benefits to the Organization

Examples of the Impact to the Overall Effectiveness of the Maintenance Team

GenesisSolutions is continuing our Enterprise Asset Management Best Practices Webinar Series in May. You are invited to attend a webinar on Asset Criticality Ranking: A Best Practices Overview on Wednesday, May 22nd, 2013 from 11:00am - 12:00pm EDT, 10:00am - 11:00am CDT.

To register, please click here.

Overview:

The Key Principles of Asset Criticality Ranking

The Requirements for Asset Criticality Ranking Execution

A Discussion of the Benefits to the Organization

A Discussion on the Examples of the Impact to the Overall Effectiveness of the Maintenance Team

What the Audience will Learn:

The standard approach to performing Asset Criticality Ranking

The basic framework of an Asset Criticality Ranking tool

Applying Asset Criticality Ranking to the CMMS

Prioritizing Planning and Scheduling with Asset Criticality Ranking

Prioritizing Improvement / Optimization efforts with Asset Criticality Ranking

Achievable Benefit Examples as a Result of Asset Criticality Ranking Application

Who Should Attend?

Planners & Schedulers

CMMS Administrators

Reliability Engineers

Maintenance Supervisors

Maintenance Managers & Directors

Asset Management Program Managers & Directors

Speaker Biography:

Quinton GoForth is the Manager of Reliability Services for GenesisSolutions, specializing in EAM System and Reliability Improvement projects. Prior to joining the Genesis team, Quinton spent the majority of his career with GAF Materials where he performed multiple operations and maintenance roles within the organization allowing him to gain a true understanding of how to incorporate reliability and operational excellence at each level as well as the importance of aligning the CMMS and other data tracking platforms with these efforts. He was responsible for the development and implementation of Reliability Centered Maintenance systems in multiple facilities. Since joining Genesis, he has assisted several BioPharma companies in identifying areas of opportunity and developing master plans for improvement in their maintenance and asset management operations.

Successful EAM & CMMS Implementations: The Importance of Culture & Change Management

Bob Steibly, Principal Reliability Consultant

Preparing to implement a new (or upgraded) EAM (Enterprise Asset Management) or CMMS (Computerized Maintenance Management System) should always start with understanding and addressing the culture prevalent within the maintenance organization. Most often, this change management element is not considered or addressed, which ultimately leads to either failure or less than optimal utilization of the EAM system.

Far too many EAM implementations begin with addressing only the technical aspects such as conversions from an older system to a newer, development of codes, development of procedures, user training, etc. However, the human element is very often ignored and is not given enough consideration, if any, until much later when the software is being implemented. This is a fundamental mistake most companies and organizations make and which leads to a much less than optimal implementation.

Why do so many implementations fail? Some of the reasons are change management related. This would include lack of clearly-defined roles and responsibilities, resistance to change, a history of failed initiatives, organizational silos, and fear of an uncertain future. Do you see some of these characteristics within your organization? Addressing the culture is fundamental to success.

Moving forward into 2013 we are very excited to continue this growth and success and have a number of significant expansion plans in place as part of ABSG. We expect to continue our integration into ABSG as we form the base for the Group’s Enterprise Asset Management (EAM) business unit which will dramatically increase our scale and size. We are already commencing geographic expansion of offices and Operations groups in both the Middle East (Dubai) and Asia-Pacific (Singapore) with further growth in other regions to follow. We have plans to further expand our service capabilities with inclusion of Mechanical Integrity and Risk-Based Inspection programs as well as Condition Monitoring. We are also significantly expanding our presence in both the Maritime and offshore Oil & Gas industries as we follow our parent company into these key market verticals.

Thank you again for a tremendous year in passing.

On behalf of all of us at GenesisSolutions and ABS, we wish you and your families a very happy, safe and prosperous 2013.

Sincerely,

Overview:

Planning & Scheduling is a key component to achieving Enterprise Asset Management improvements, specifically for maintenance activities and subsequent equipment & facility reliability. Ask yourself: What is the true purpose of your maintenance technicians, and then think about what they spend the majority of their time on; You may be surprised: it’s not pure maintenance activities (i.e. wrench time). Eliminating non value-add time (searching for parts, getting approvals, looking for procedures & job plans, etc.) from a maintenance technicians daily tasks is a strategic goal that can lead to improvements in efficiency, reduced downtime, improved safety, and is a step towards maintenance excellence on the Enterprise Asset Management Maturity Continuum. This webinar presentation will demonstrate and facilitate a discussion on:

Key Principles of the Planning and Scheduling Function

Requirements to Implement an Efficient Planning and Scheduling Team

Realizable Benefits of an Effective Program

Examples of the Impact to the Overall Effectiveness of the Maintenance Team

What the Audience will Learn:

Elements of an effective Planning & Scheduling Program

Basic Building Blocks to Establish a Planning & Scheduling Function

How to Gain Executive Sponsorship / Endorsement

Achievable Benefit Examples as a Result of a Successful Program

How to Measure Success

Speaker Biography:

Matt Midas, a Senior Account Executive with GenesisSolutions, has been involved in the maintenance & reliability industry for over twenty years. A graduate of the US Merchant Marine Academy, he has served aboard US flag merchant vessels and the USS Jesse L Brown, FF1089, where he was responsible for maintenance, engineering and safety programs. Matt worked at the Charleston Naval Shipyard where he was qualified as a Nuclear Engineer in the maintenance, repair and overhaul of S5W and S6G nuclear propulsion plants. He has also worked as a Plant Operations and Maintenance Manager where he was responsible for 186 facilities in Washington, DC and has implemented a number of computerized maintenance management systems (CMMS).
GenesisSolutions Announces 2012 Founders Award Recipients

Since 2003, GenesisSolutions has recognized its employees that exhibit leadership and perseverance in the face of difficult business conditions and unforeseen project constraints. These team members consistently deliver project quality excellence in spite of these obstacles.

The Founders Award is given to the employee(s) who demonstrates excellence in one of the following areas as determined by their customers:

Customer Service

Teamwork

Results

GenesisSolutions received a number of customer driven nominations, and has selected the following individuals as the 2012 GenesisSolutions Founders Award Recipients.

Chad Bring, Principal Consultant

Chad Bring was assigned to an International Biopharmaceutical Customer to help correct data issues identified early in an IBM Maximo Asset Management Upgrade planning process. The overarching desire was to normalize and standardize the data and processes and move the business further up the Maintenance Maturity Continuum ladder. The customer was deadlocked in the Reactive / Planned Maintenance portion of the curve and was looking to move into full Reliability Centered Maintenance.

Chad was able to quickly identify where the gaps in the data existed and devise a plan of action that would turn this customer into a best in class RCM / EAM organization. He worked closely with the business units to understand their processes and how the required changes would fit. Chad went above and beyond in making certain that the business units understood what was occurring and why. This was not portrayed as something fast or easy but something that our business could grow into as they matured. It was obvious to the business units that Chad was someone that spoke their language, understood their issues, and was very sympathetic to their concerns. Chad readily engaged whenever a question was asked and the answer provided was always directed towards the end goal of full RCM.

Several months into the process, our customer was acquired and the Maximo Upgrade / RCM Data normalization turned into a Maximo > Infor EAM migration. Chad changed gears and began working with the business units to determine the best way possible to migrate the data into a new system, while maintaining its integrity and continuing the drive towards RCM. Chad quickly made himself the go-to-guy for questions related to the migration and RCM process. He never stopped driving towards full RCM and was always ready to discuss options to improve processes.

Chad readily completed all deliverables on time or sooner with more than the requisite information. These deliverables were accompanied with options for discussion that we had never considered. Chad has built and maintained an outstanding rapport with our customers end users at a critical time. Between his knowledge, business sense, empathy, drive and professionalism we would welcome the opportunity to work with Chad again. In a sea of RCM / EAM professionals, Chad handily stands out as among the best.

Quinton GoForth, Manager, Reliability Solutions

Quinton GoForth was engaged with a Global Pharmaceutical Customer in 2012. GenesisSolutions was selected to assist this global organization on their path towards Maintenance Excellence. The initial project phase was to occur on a very aggressive schedule and with a tool that was customized to meet the client’s needs. The initial phase ended successfully and on time. Because of this successful initial phase, it has enabled the project team to be fully prepared to execute the implementation planning stage of the project.

Since the beginning of the initiative through the workshop phase, Quinton’s contributions were critical. His expertise around maintenance and reliability best practices has helped our customer look at key elements of maintenance excellence comprehensively; the assessment tool utilized is innovative and Quinton’s own flexibility and responsiveness to changing business needs was commendable. Quinton developed relationships based on trust, mutual respect and shared passion, and quickly became an integral team member in partnership with our customer. Quinton’s customer focus, continuous improvement mindset and his passion/ fire-in-the-belly all contributed towards an effective enterprise asset management program.

Chris Hancock, Senior Systems Analyst

Chris Hancock was assigned to a multi-year, global IBM Maximo Asset Management upgrade project with an international food processing firm and commodity organization, and also was a key ingredient to the success of the Maximo upgrade project in 2012.

Data integrity issues plagued the global database and Chris was able to work through all issues and map the data to the new Maximo database with minimal issues after go-live with the actual data. During the week of the largest production move, the environment was very stressful. It took over 40 hours just to move the data. Chris experienced a major personal crisis at home and yet continued to support the project during this time period. This effort went way above and beyond any expectations (from both GenesisSolutions and our customer) a professional organization has for an employee or a consulting team member.

Our customer felt fortunate to have Chris for their upgrade and as an integral part of their project team, as do we having Chris as an employee at GenesisSolutions. Chris conveyed a huge sense of personal commitment, dedication and knowledge to this successful project outcome.

Leading asset management solution and service provider stands out for projects that enable sustainability in its customers’ supply chains.

November 19, 2012 Ridgefield, CT - GenesisSolutions, a fully integrated global Enterprise Asset Management (EAM) service provider and IBM Business Partner and Reseller, today announced that the company has been selected by Supply & Demand Chain Executive, the executive’s user manual for successful supply and demand chain transformation, as one of this year’s recipients of the coveted Supply & Demand Chain Executive Magazine 2012 Green Supply Chain Awards, highlighting companies that stand out for their projects to incorporate sustainability objectives into their own supply chains or to enable sustainability in their customers’ supply chains.

“Leading companies recognize that initiating sustainable practices in their supply chain processes is key towards driving their competitive edge in today’s recovering economy,” said Barry Hochfelder, Editor, Supply & Demand Chain Executive. “This has been increasingly evident over the past few years and is relatively clear with the increased number of entries we received this year for our annual green awards. Thanks to companies like GenesisSolutions, the increased adoption of green best practices and strategies will only continue to grow.”

“Genesis is honored to be recognized by Supply & Demand Chain Executive as a Green Supply Chain Leader,” says Joe Pitman, Senior Director, Sales & Marketing for GenesisSolutions. “Sustainability is not only key to the functionality of the supply chain, it is imperative for a healthy planet Earth and is a core focus of GenesisSolutions and our service offerings. In fact, it is because our customers extend the lifecycle of their assets that there is significantly less waste introduced into landfills due to the untimely replacement of industrial equipment due to poor maintenance practices.”

The 2012 Green Supply Chain Awards recognize companies making green or sustainability a core part of their supply chain strategy, and are working to achieve measurable sustainability goals within their own operations and/or supply chains, in the areas of Sourcing/Procurement, Fulfillment/Logistics, Operations, Product Lifecycle Management, and other areas of the supply chain. The awards also recognize providers of supply chain solutions and services assisting their customers in achieving measurable sustainability goals. Submissions were judged based on the clarity and content of the goals and strategy (30 percent), the extent of the steps being taken (30 percent), the impact of the results to date and projected results (30 percent), and the form and presentation of the information submitted (10 percent).

“The goal of the ‘Supply & Demand Chain Executive Green Awards’ is to highlight a range of strategies and solutions that companies are employing to incorporate sustainability into the supply chain,” Hochfelder said. “Our readers are corporate executives and line-of-business leaders who want to know about the supply chain solution and service providers that are enabling supply chain sustainability.”

The full listing of the 2012 Supply & Demand Chain Executive Green Supply Chain Awards recipients will be featured in the November/December 2012 issue of Supply & Demand Chain Executive magazine and online at http://www.SDCExec.com.

Employee Spotlight: Mr. Mark Wolfgram

Principal Reliability Engineer

Mark Wolfgram joined GenesisSolutions as a Principal Reliability Engineer in June 2012. He brings over 30 years of varied roles and responsibilities in engineering, operations, maintenance and business management to the GenesisSolutions team. Upon graduation from Purdue University with a BS in Mechanical Engineering, Mark began his career as an Engineer for Miller Brewing Company where he gained valuable experience in engineering design, project management, maintenance, and operations management. After assignments at four Miller Breweries around the country, Mark moved his family to Sarasota, Florida and to a new position at Tropicana Products, a division of Seagram Company, Ltd.

While at Tropicana, Mark held several senior management positions including Director of Engineering, Director of Total Quality Management, Director of Co-Packing Operations and Director of Maintenance. As Director of Maintenance he was asked to lead a corporate-wide initiative to reengineer the maintenance processes for all of the Seagram organization. This assignment and the valuable lessons learned ultimately led to his departure from Tropicana in 1999, and to a successful asset management consulting career serving a wide variety of clients in the food, beverage, pharmaceutical, petrochemical, and government sectors. Most recently he served as the maintenance manager for a large commercial baking company located in southern New Jersey and was the corporate maintenance team lead for implementation of SAP enterprise software.

Mark and his wife, Lynn, have five children and two charming grandchildren. They currently reside in Sicklerville, New Jersey where Lynn owns and publishes four periodical magazines. The traveling life of a consultant fits well into their lifestyle as the children are scattered across the country from California, to Florida, Minnesota, North Carolina and Virginia; including the two youngest sons proudly serving in the US Armed Forces.

Asset Integrity Management (AIM)

A Framework for World Class Systems

Asset integrity can be defined as the ability of an asset to perform its required function effectively and efficiently while protecting health, safety and the environment. Asset Integrity Management (AIM) is the holistic approach to preserving and assuring the condition and operation of the assets, while complying with Owner standards and regulatory requirements.

An effectively implemented AIM System achieves the expectation of following good industry practice by being guided by the Asset Integrity Toolkit and PAS 55. The main requirements of the AIM System are:

Meet the specifications of the established safety case

Manage to industry recognized good standards and practices

Meet the terms of the management agreed policy statement

Ensure compliance with all of the above through effective auditing
