Asset Management Master Planning: The Evolution of Maintenance Master Planning (1st in a Series)

A Welcome to 2012

Rob MacArthur, President of GenesisSolutions

Happy New Year. I hope everyone had an enjoyable holiday season with friends and family.

2011 marked our 12th year for GenesisSolutions. Despite a variety of economic headwinds facing the global economy, we finished a near record year in terms of growth and volume. We thank you, our customers and partners, for making this happen.

Throughout the year we continued to grow in all practice areas and all geographies. It would seem true that Enterprise Asset Management is a fundamental necessity for our industrial customers in both up, down and sideway markets.

Looking forward into 2012 we continue to see strong growth as the fusion of EAM technologies and advanced reliability-based maintenance programs continues to expand. We will of course continue to grow to meet our customers growing needs related to EAM. We have also entered into key strategic relationships with a number of leading industrial service and technology firms which allows us to expand our reach as well as provide more expansive and robust EAM solutions to our customers. More to come on all of these in future newsletters but we anticipate a very exciting 2012 ahead.

As always, thank you for all your support and business throughout 2011. From all of us here at GenesisSolutions we wish a very happy, prosperous and safe 2012 to you and your families.

Best Regards,

Rob MacArthur, President

Asset Management Master Planning

The Evolution of Maintenance Master Planning

Mike Greenholtz & Quinton GoForth

Early last year an article was posted entitled “Maintenance Master Planning” where Mike Greenholtz described the implementation approach and benefits of an Asset Management program. Much of the article described Mike’s global implementation experiences, which began nearly a decade ago at a world class Pharmaceutical company. We have had the opportunity over the past several years to introduce Maintenance Master Planning to many of our GenesisSolutions customers. As part of a continuous improvement effort, we have modified the master planning process to include a DMAIC approach, which is a 6 Sigma quality management tool, thus evolving Maintenance Master Planning to a more comprehensive Asset Management Master Planning process.

In a sequential series of articles to be published in this newsletter, we will describe the updated process in detail to provide you with a greater understanding of how this method can bring value to your company. Over the course of this five part series, we will convey how we “Define” asset management maturity, “Measure” and assess the current state of asset management, “Analyze” the assessment to develop a master plan, “Improve” asset management through master plan implementation, and finally “Control” and sustain the performance improvement.

President, GenesisSolutions

Happy New Year to all. 2010 will likely be a year that many won’t regret putting into the annals of history. Thankfully the outlook for 2011 appears to be more positive. Last year was a good year for GenesisSolutions thanks to the hard work of our staff and the continued loyalty of our customers. Over the course of 2010 we had the opportunity to invest heavily in our Asset Reliability business unit, product development, as well as many key infrastructure and knowledge management initiatives.

As we turn the corner into 2011, we are very excited about the level of customer activity we are seeing. We are starting many new projects for customers in the pharmaceutical / biotech, manufacturing, oil & gas, power utility, water / wastewater and facilities verticals. We are seeing growth in all major geographies including North America, Europe, Asia and South America. We are adding a significant number of new professionals to our ranks. It is an exciting time to be involved in the Enterprise Asset Management business.

We sincerely appreciate your business and continued loyalty throughout the years. We wish you a happy, healthy and productive new year and look forward to seeing you in 2011.

Feature Article: The Building Blocks of Maintenance: An Asset Reliability Approach

Employee Spotlight: David Knowles

Principal Consultant, 2010 Founders Award Recipient

David (Dave) Knowles began his maintenance career shortly after leaving Siena College by enlisting in the United States Navy. As a Sonar Technician, Dave continued his studies in electricity and electronics with a strong emphasis on computer systems. After graduating at the top of his class Dave served onboard the USS Harry W. Hill DD-986 and the USS Antietam CG-54 leading top-notched technical crews in the operation, maintenance and repair of sophisticated sonar systems.

After his sea tours, Dave was offered a position in the tactical training department of Fleet Anti-Submarine Warfare training facility in San Diego, CA to instruct US Navy officers as well as junior and senior international officers in all aspects of Ant-Submarine Warfare. Dave was subsequently awarded the Master Training Specialist designation as one of the Navy’s top instructors.

Dave pursued his passion for improving maintenance environments after leaving the Navy and worked as the Naval Engineer of Combat Systems Maintenance with Litton (now Northrop Grumman), and a CMMS Program Manager and Reliability Engineer at Vitesse Semiconductor. It was at Vitesse where he met Rob MacArthur, the President of GenesisSolutions. In a career transition Dave joined GenesisSolutions in February 2000 as one of the original “dirty dozen” team members. Since then Dave has held a variety of positions within Genesis in technical, functional and managerial roles, and has supported the following industries with maintenance improvement programs and CMMS upgrades: Pharmaceutical, Power Generation and Distribution, Oil and Gas, Aviation, and Waste Water Treatment. This year, Dave was selected as our Founders Award winner, the highest award at Genesis. This award is given to the individual who has created outstanding value for their customer and project, as nominated and described by their customer. Dave won this for his role as Project Manager for a maintenance planning & scheduling project at a major off-shore Oil & Gas operator.

His love of people and teaching, matched with his decades of maintenance leadership blend perfectly to support his role providing maintenance improvement solutions for his GenesisSolutions clients. Dave lives in South Carolina with his wife and two children.

The Building Blocks for Maintenance: An Asset Reliability Approach

by Bob Steibly, Sr. Reliability Engineer

Have you considered implementing an asset reliability program in your plant but have continued putting it off because it seems like far too much effort in terms of resource allocation? If so, then consider a streamlined approach that is tailored to your plant operations and plant culture. A good asset reliability approach does not have to be a resource hog for you. Just remember: The ultimate goal of an Asset Reliability Program is to maximize equipment life and minimize scheduled and unscheduled downtime.

This article will present an approach to asset reliability that relies on the current resources you have in your plant operations: people, capital, software, and some basic building blocks of any good maintenance organization.
