Asset Management Master Planning: The Evolution of Maintenance Master Planning (1st in a Series)
EAM & Reliability Strategy Seminar: February 23rd, 2012, Atlanta, Georgia
Upcoming Industry Events

A Welcome to 2012

Rob MacArthur, President of GenesisSolutions

Happy New Year. I hope everyone had an enjoyable holiday season with friends and family.

2011 marked our 12th year for GenesisSolutions. Despite a variety of economic headwinds facing the global economy, we finished a near record year in terms of growth and volume. We thank you, our customers and partners, for making this happen.

Throughout the year we continued to grow in all practice areas and all geographies. It would seem true that Enterprise Asset Management is a fundamental necessity for our industrial customers in both up, down and sideway markets.

Looking forward into 2012 we continue to see strong growth as the fusion of EAM technologies and advanced reliability-based maintenance programs continues to expand. We will of course continue to grow to meet our customers growing needs related to EAM. We have also entered into key strategic relationships with a number of leading industrial service and technology firms which allows us to expand our reach as well as provide more expansive and robust EAM solutions to our customers. More to come on all of these in future newsletters but we anticipate a very exciting 2012 ahead.

As always, thank you for all your support and business throughout 2011. From all of us here at GenesisSolutions we wish a very happy, prosperous and safe 2012 to you and your families.

Best Regards,

Rob MacArthur, President

Asset Management Master Planning

The Evolution of Maintenance Master Planning

Mike Greenholtz & Quinton GoForth

Early last year an article was posted entitled “Maintenance Master Planning” where Mike Greenholtz described the implementation approach and benefits of an Asset Management program. Much of the article described Mike’s global implementation experiences, which began nearly a decade ago at a world class Pharmaceutical company. We have had the opportunity over the past several years to introduce Maintenance Master Planning to many of our GenesisSolutions customers. As part of a continuous improvement effort, we have modified the master planning process to include a DMAIC approach, which is a 6 Sigma quality management tool, thus evolving Maintenance Master Planning to a more comprehensive Asset Management Master Planning process.

In a sequential series of articles to be published in this newsletter, we will describe the updated process in detail to provide you with a greater understanding of how this method can bring value to your company. Over the course of this five part series, we will convey how we “Define” asset management maturity, “Measure” and assess the current state of asset management, “Analyze” the assessment to develop a master plan, “Improve” asset management through master plan implementation, and finally “Control” and sustain the performance improvement.

Partnership Announcement: IBM Tivoli Maximo Asset Management
Alliance Announcement: Solufy AKWIRE Visual Scheduler
EAM & Reliability Strategy Seminar: October 4, 2011 - Houston, Texas

New Employee Spotlight: Brian Taite

Senior Reliability Engineer

Brian Taite graduated from Memorial University of Newfoundland with a Bachelor of Science in Mathematics in 1992 and Bachelor of Civil Engineering in 1994 and went on to complete a Masters of Environmental Engineering in 1999. Prior to joining GenesisSolutions he was engaged as a consultant for a number of major oil companies, government agencies and within private industry for environmental site assessments, risk assessments, site remediation, project management and health and safety planning.

Working on environmental clean-up projects led to experience in maintenance and management of various remediation equipment systems. Along with overall project management, financial planning and cost control, Brian was involved with all aspects of project work including preparation of technical specifications, equipment refurbishment and optimization, corrective maintenance, failure modes identification and assessment, recommendations for system improvements, and the development of preventative maintenance routines.

In 2006, Brian joined the GenesisSolutions team as a contractor in The Netherlands as part of the Shell Upstream International Europe, Technical Integrity Enhancement Program (TIEP) for the ONEgas Asset. This includes almost 60 natural gas offshore production platforms and two onshore gas plants in the Southern North Sea. The project involves identification of safety critical elements, development of performance standards and review and development of maintenance routines in Shell Oil’s CMMS system (SAP Blueprint) to ensure the performance standard assurance tasks are well defined and fully covered under the preventative maintenance plans for all safety critical equipment.

Now a GenesisSolutions employee, Brian has embraced the opportunity to become involved with the North Sea Oil and Gas industry and to help Shell maintain its high safety standards through top tier maintenance programs and compliance activities. He has great personal and professional satisfaction while applying his background in maintenance and reliability engineering to enhance the technical integrity of ONEgas assets, protect the environment and ultimately ensure the safety of the people who work at these facilities.

GenesisSolutions - Tivoli Support Provider & Reseller

IBM Maximo Asset Management

GenesisSolutions has executed an IBM Tivoli Support Provider & Reseller Contract for the IBM Maximo Asset Management software application. With this new contract, GenesisSolutions is now an Authorized IBM Business Partner and officially licensed to resell, implement and provide Level One Support to IBM Tivoli’s Maximo Customers.

Although GenesisSolutions has been a business partner of IBM as a Systems Integrator for the past 12 years, this new contract solidifies a long standing business relationship and opens up a number of value-driven opportunities for our customer base.

Joe Pitman, Vice President of Sales & Marketing at GenesisSolutions commented: “This is a long time coming. We have been working closely with the IBM Maximo Asset Management team for years, and now we have a platform to build an even more profitable relationship and solutions to our mutual customer base. This new agreement makes sense for all parties, and we’re excited to align our IBM Maximo business practice to increase our customers overall satisfaction with their best-of-breed and industry defining application.”

GenesisSolutions will be a Gold Sponsor at the upcoming IBM Pulse 2012 conference to be held March 2012 in Las Vegas, Nevada. In addition, we will be promoting our new relationship at both industry and regional Maximo User Group conferences throughout North America & Europe over the next several months.

GenesisSolutions & Solufy Announce Strategic Alliance

Commence First Teaming Engagement Summer 2011

GenesisSolutions and Solufy have announced a strategic alliance to expand their portfolio of service and software offerings to their customers and market base. GenesisSolution’s professionals will assist Solufy’s customers in the installation, training and rollout of the AKWIRE Visual Scheduler for the IBM Maximo Asset Management Software application.

In conjunction with the recently announced alliance, GenesisSolutions & Solufy are currently engaged with their first joint project. The combined team is providing reliability and maintenance expertise to support one of the largest producers of high-quality metallurgical coke in the Americas with the installation, configuration, training and operation of Solufy’s AKWIRE Visual Scheduler, and to support this client with planning and scheduling operations for both short and long term work across a network of plants.

The AKWIRE Visual Scheduler for Maximo is a user friendly, flexible and powerful planning and scheduling tool to visually perform PM forecasting, organize and prioritize existing Work Orders and assign tasks to workforces, while showing the availability of Labor, Crafts, Workgroups, Crews, and Tools / Materials.

Employee Spotlight: Chad Bring, Senior Consultant
Project Profile: Pfizer Australia Reliability Improvements
EAM & Reliability Seminar: Houston, Texas - April 27, 2011
GenesisSolutions: Upcoming Events

Employee Spotlight: Chad Bring

Senior Consultant

Chad Bring, a Senior Consultant with GenesisSolutions, began his career as a quality control manager for Vanity Fair. In 1998, Chad accepted a transitional position as a field consultant with Datastream Systems where he helped customers implement and develop Datastream’s CMMS product line. Chad focused on helping clients realize the benefits attributed to Quality Based Production through better maintenance practices.

Chad transitioned from the consulting arena and accepted a plant management position with Oldcastle in late 2000. This challenging role included System Administration, Training and Mentoring, Quality, and Environmental Health and Safety Management responsibilities in a culturally diverse environment for the largest manufacturer of building products in North America. While his success in that role was rewarding Chad realized that he truly missed the consulting work and the diverse vertical exposure and challenges that come with those engagements.

Chad found himself at home in 2003 when he accepted a position with GenesisSolutions. He has worked in multiple role assignments for Genesis ranging from Field Engineer to Project Manager. His skill sets in Engineering Services, Reliability, Validation and Testing, Configuration, and Business Process Re-engineering allow Chad to transition gracefully from pharmaceutical engagements to heavy manufacturing engagements and consistently deliver quality service and focused solutions to his clients.

In April 2011, Chad received Special Recognition from Genesis for his services performed with MedImmune. Chad has initiated improvements in the areas of storeroom management, data accuracy, reliability services, support and technical infrastructure. As a result of his performance, Chad has recently been named the MedImmune Business Owner of the Maximo application.

GenesisSolutions Reliability Project Recap

Pfizer Australia

During the fourth quarter of 2010 GenesisSolutions completed a reliability project for three Pfizer sites in Australia. This effort was targeted at enhancing reliability improvements at each plant by providing focus on:

Reliability Engineering Methodology & Tools

Equipment Changeovers

Mature Asset Maintenance and Support

A number of Pfizer Global Reliability Program (GRP) tools were incorporated into the project in order to continue standardizing on the Pfizer Global Reliability methodology.

Feature Article: The Building Blocks of Maintenance: An Asset Reliability Approach
EAM & Reliability Seminar: Seattle, February 2, 2011
2011 Upcoming Events

Employee Spotlight: David Knowles

Principal Consultant, 2010 Founders Award Recipient

David (Dave) Knowles began his maintenance career shortly after leaving Siena College by enlisting in the United States Navy. As a Sonar Technician, Dave continued his studies in electricity and electronics with a strong emphasis on computer systems. After graduating at the top of his class Dave served onboard the USS Harry W. Hill DD-986 and the USS Antietam CG-54 leading top-notched technical crews in the operation, maintenance and repair of sophisticated sonar systems.

After his sea tours, Dave was offered a position in the tactical training department of Fleet Anti-Submarine Warfare training facility in San Diego, CA to instruct US Navy officers as well as junior and senior international officers in all aspects of Ant-Submarine Warfare. Dave was subsequently awarded the Master Training Specialist designation as one of the Navy’s top instructors.

Dave pursued his passion for improving maintenance environments after leaving the Navy and worked as the Naval Engineer of Combat Systems Maintenance with Litton (now Northrop Grumman), and a CMMS Program Manager and Reliability Engineer at Vitesse Semiconductor. It was at Vitesse where he met Rob MacArthur, the President of GenesisSolutions. In a career transition Dave joined GenesisSolutions in February 2000 as one of the original “dirty dozen” team members. Since then Dave has held a variety of positions within Genesis in technical, functional and managerial roles, and has supported the following industries with maintenance improvement programs and CMMS upgrades: Pharmaceutical, Power Generation and Distribution, Oil and Gas, Aviation, and Waste Water Treatment. This year, Dave was selected as our Founders Award winner, the highest award at Genesis. This award is given to the individual who has created outstanding value for their customer and project, as nominated and described by their customer. Dave won this for his role as Project Manager for a maintenance planning & scheduling project at a major off-shore Oil & Gas operator.

His love of people and teaching, matched with his decades of maintenance leadership blend perfectly to support his role providing maintenance improvement solutions for his GenesisSolutions clients. Dave lives in South Carolina with his wife and two children.

The Building Blocks for Maintenance: An Asset Reliability Approach

by Bob Steibly, Sr. Reliability Engineer

Have you considered implementing an asset reliability program in your plant but have continued putting it off because it seems like far too much effort in terms of resource allocation? If so, then consider a streamlined approach that is tailored to your plant operations and plant culture. A good asset reliability approach does not have to be a resource hog for you. Just remember: The ultimate goal of an Asset Reliability Program is to maximize equipment life and minimize scheduled and unscheduled downtime.

This article will present an approach to asset reliability that relies on the current resources you have in your plant operations: people, capital, software, and some basic building blocks of any good maintenance organization.
