A serious equipment breakdown usually occurs at night, on a weekend, or on holiday when on-site resources are slim and limited personnel are available. While people do not want or expect a serious breakdown, the proactive measures you take in advance can be key to your team handling the problem in a professional and effective manner.

New Employee Spotlight: Quinton GoForth, Principal Consultant - Reliability Services & EAM Systems
Feature Article: The Building Blocks for Maintenance
Project Profile: Shell

New Employee Spotlight

Quinton GoForth, Principal Consultant - Reliability Services & EAM Systems

Quinton GoForth began his career in 2001 as a materials engineer in the diesel engine industry where he developed standard operating procedures for material analysis and created a calibration monitoring database. After graduating from Michigan State University in 2002 with a Mechanical Engineering degree, he joined GAF Materials Corporation and was placed in their leadership and development program. Through this accelerated process, he learned core concepts of the entire manufacturing process including quality, production, purchasing, and maintenance.

During his time with GAF, Quinton was trained on reliability centered maintenance concepts and manufacturing philosophies emphasizing continuous improvement. He developed and implemented his own reliability program in four different facilities focusing on preventive maintenance optimization including predictive technologies, improving equipment reliability and building sustainable systems. Quinton developed CMMS training guides and best practices as well as powerful reporting tools for daily work execution and performance tracking, benchmarking these items for all facilities.

Quinton has executed every role within the maintenance organization, including storeroom coordinator, planner / scheduler, supervisor, manager and superintendent, gaining a true understanding of reliability work management and the importance of aligning the CMMS with this process. Incorporating reliability concepts into EAM platforms through the development of robust, sustainable systems will be Quinton’s initial focus as he joins the GenesisSolutions team.

The Building Blocks for Maintenance

By Bob Steibly, Sr. Reliability Engineer

Most Maintenance organizations have been designed and built upon foundational building blocks that have brought the organization to the point it’s at today. The current Maintenance organization may be one of the best, the worst, or anywhere in between. How well those building blocks were designed and implemented defines the Maintenance organization.

In this initial article we will begin with the overall scope of the building blocks required for a Best in Class Maintenance organization and take a look at the composition of each of those building blocks. A Best in Class Maintenance operation is one that is both effective and cost efficient in its performance and service to its customers. We will also look at how these building blocks fit together to support or compliment each other as the Maintenance organization continually matures.

Project Profile: Shell

GenesisSolutions Completes Maintenance & Integrity Project at Den Helder Gas Plant

GenesisSolutions has completed a Maintenance & Integrity Execution (MIE) project at the Den Helder NL gas plant in the 3rd quarter of 2010. Den Helder is the first Shell facility in Europe to go live with this enhanced Safety Critical Equipment Management Process. This effort has entailed:

Final identification of 12,000 Safety Critical Equipment (SCE) in SAP

Development and publishing of 40 Equipment Performance Standards in both English and Dutch

Review and categorization of over 1200 SAP maintenance plans

Enabling the SAP QM module for calculative measurement and tracking of the SCEs

Linking of over 200 Master Inspection Characteristics to the 500 relevant Task Lists in SAP

This project was completed over 2 years and was worked on, at various stages, by 10+ Genesis employees and contractors. The learnings and recommendations from this project are being put to use as GenesisSolutions continues this rollout to the UK southern / North Sea (OGW) to be completed this year and the NL platforms (OGE) scheduled for rollout in Q3 of next year.About Shell:

Shell is a global group of energy and petrochemicals companies. With around 101,000 employees in more than 90 countries and territories, Shell helps to meet the world’s growing demand for energy in economically, environmentally and socially responsible ways.

GenesisSolutions: August 2010 Events

New Employee Spotlight: Art Young

Principal Consultant, Program Manager

Art Young recently joined the GenesisSolutions Infor EAM practice and is assigned as the Program Manager for one of Genesis’s key pharmaceutical customers. Art brings over 15 years of maintenance management consulting experience to Genesis, including six years leading the Professional Services Group at Datastream Systems (now Infor). Art has a wide variety of experience implementing Datastream’s MP2, as well as Datastream 7i, which is now known as Infor EAM. Additionally, Art has experience with other EAM products, including IBM’s Maximo, Ventyx’s Passport and EMPAC. In addition to his maintenance management experience, Art has led the development of custom applications that enable large-scale business process reengineering for manufacturers and was the founder of a company that provided web-based team collaboration applications to over 1000 clients worldwide. Art’s industry experience includes paper manufacturing, oil and gas, plastics manufacturing, pharmaceuticals and medical devices, facilities management and general manufacturing.

The Value of Maintenance Site Assessments

On the Path of Continuous Improvement

by Mike Greenholtz

An essential tool for defining the path forward for your maintenance organization strategy is the Site Assessment. Understanding where both the strengths and opportunities reside is an important first step in a transformation effort. The GenesisSolutions assessment is focused on providing our customers with a keen understanding of their performance across the following 7 Maintenance elements:

Organizational Readiness

EAM Database Management

Work Management

Maintenance and Reliability

Inventory Management

Planning and Scheduling

Metrics and Performance Improvement

Our organizational readiness review looks at your maintenance department’s organizational culture, communication tools, employee development and training capabilities. The intent is to understand how the maintenance group is currently positioned to maximize the utilization of the CMMS and RCM strategies to support your company’s stated business objectives. Providing additional depth to the assessment incorporates our analysis of the existing EAM database and work management process flows, which are foundational elements of a Maintenance and Reliability program. We then evaluate the maturity level of the inventory management, planning and scheduling process and execution. Finally, we review the management controls and reporting systems that are in place to gauge your overall maintenance program effectiveness and business impact.

Our two person team comprised of an EAM and Reliability professional can complete a site assessment in 2 to 3 days, depending on the scale of the host site. Our methodology and experience provides a comprehensive scorecard and detailed report that includes a prioritized list of actionable items. A performance tracking chart is generated for each element and one for your overall program. Most importantly, our findings and recommendations can be used as the basis for your updated Maintenance Master Plan.

We encourage our customers to periodically self assess in order to monitor progress of their continuous improvement journey. Our decade plus of CMMS implementation experience combined with deployments of RCM strategies provides us with a unique perspective for conducting these assessments. Our EAM database management evaluation has provided our customers additional insight as to how to further leverage their CMMS investment for greater ROI.

To learn more about our Site Assessment Tool and Methodology, please contact Mike Greenholtz at mgreenholtz@genesissolutions.com

Today there are very few forums for individuals to showcase the methods they are embracing in an effort to leverage the latest technology to optimize their company’s facilities, monitor and lower equipment costs, bench mark key indicators and eliminate costly repairs. This exchange of information is designed to optimize the use of Maximo’s capabilities in the Facilities Environment. The integrated principles of business methods, administration, and practices of architecting, planning, and maintaining buildings, grounds, systems, and quality customer service needs to create optimal work environments. This meeting will be a great opportunity to exchange ideas, share visions, problem-solve, and take home a fresh new look at the best-practices for your organization.
