A serious equipment breakdown usually occurs at night, on a weekend, or on holiday when on-site resources are slim and limited personnel are available. While people do not want or expect a serious breakdown, the proactive measures you take in advance can be key to your team handling the problem in a professional and effective manner.

Alliance Announcement: Solufy AKWIRE Visual Scheduler
EAM & Reliability Strategy Seminar: October 4, 2011 - Houston, Texas

New Employee Spotlight: Brian Taite

Senior Reliability Engineer

Brian Taite graduated from Memorial University of Newfoundland with a Bachelor of Science in Mathematics in 1992 and Bachelor of Civil Engineering in 1994 and went on to complete a Masters of Environmental Engineering in 1999. Prior to joining GenesisSolutions he was engaged as a consultant for a number of major oil companies, government agencies and within private industry for environmental site assessments, risk assessments, site remediation, project management and health and safety planning.

Working on environmental clean-up projects led to experience in maintenance and management of various remediation equipment systems. Along with overall project management, financial planning and cost control, Brian was involved with all aspects of project work including preparation of technical specifications, equipment refurbishment and optimization, corrective maintenance, failure modes identification and assessment, recommendations for system improvements, and the development of preventative maintenance routines.

In 2006, Brian joined the GenesisSolutions team as a contractor in The Netherlands as part of the Shell Upstream International Europe, Technical Integrity Enhancement Program (TIEP) for the ONEgas Asset. This includes almost 60 natural gas offshore production platforms and two onshore gas plants in the Southern North Sea. The project involves identification of safety critical elements, development of performance standards and review and development of maintenance routines in Shell Oil’s CMMS system (SAP Blueprint) to ensure the performance standard assurance tasks are well defined and fully covered under the preventative maintenance plans for all safety critical equipment.

Now a GenesisSolutions employee, Brian has embraced the opportunity to become involved with the North Sea Oil and Gas industry and to help Shell maintain its high safety standards through top tier maintenance programs and compliance activities. He has great personal and professional satisfaction while applying his background in maintenance and reliability engineering to enhance the technical integrity of ONEgas assets, protect the environment and ultimately ensure the safety of the people who work at these facilities.

GenesisSolutions - Tivoli Support Provider & Reseller

IBM Maximo Asset Management

GenesisSolutions has executed an IBM Tivoli Support Provider & Reseller Contract for the IBM Maximo Asset Management software application. With this new contract, GenesisSolutions is now an Authorized IBM Business Partner and officially licensed to resell, implement and provide Level One Support to IBM Tivoli’s Maximo Customers.

Although GenesisSolutions has been a business partner of IBM as a Systems Integrator for the past 12 years, this new contract solidifies a long standing business relationship and opens up a number of value-driven opportunities for our customer base.

Joe Pitman, Vice President of Sales & Marketing at GenesisSolutions commented: “This is a long time coming. We have been working closely with the IBM Maximo Asset Management team for years, and now we have a platform to build an even more profitable relationship and solutions to our mutual customer base. This new agreement makes sense for all parties, and we’re excited to align our IBM Maximo business practice to increase our customers overall satisfaction with their best-of-breed and industry defining application.”

GenesisSolutions will be a Gold Sponsor at the upcoming IBM Pulse 2012 conference to be held March 2012 in Las Vegas, Nevada. In addition, we will be promoting our new relationship at both industry and regional Maximo User Group conferences throughout North America & Europe over the next several months.

GenesisSolutions & Solufy Announce Strategic Alliance

Commence First Teaming Engagement Summer 2011

GenesisSolutions and Solufy have announced a strategic alliance to expand their portfolio of service and software offerings to their customers and market base. GenesisSolution’s professionals will assist Solufy’s customers in the installation, training and rollout of the AKWIRE Visual Scheduler for the IBM Maximo Asset Management Software application.

In conjunction with the recently announced alliance, GenesisSolutions & Solufy are currently engaged with their first joint project. The combined team is providing reliability and maintenance expertise to support one of the largest producers of high-quality metallurgical coke in the Americas with the installation, configuration, training and operation of Solufy’s AKWIRE Visual Scheduler, and to support this client with planning and scheduling operations for both short and long term work across a network of plants.

The AKWIRE Visual Scheduler for Maximo is a user friendly, flexible and powerful planning and scheduling tool to visually perform PM forecasting, organize and prioritize existing Work Orders and assign tasks to workforces, while showing the availability of Labor, Crafts, Workgroups, Crews, and Tools / Materials.

Employee Spotlight: Chad Bring, Senior Consultant
Project Profile: Pfizer Australia Reliability Improvements
EAM & Reliability Seminar: Houston, Texas - April 27, 2011
GenesisSolutions: Upcoming Events

Employee Spotlight: Chad Bring

Senior Consultant

Chad Bring, a Senior Consultant with GenesisSolutions, began his career as a quality control manager for Vanity Fair. In 1998, Chad accepted a transitional position as a field consultant with Datastream Systems where he helped customers implement and develop Datastream’s CMMS product line. Chad focused on helping clients realize the benefits attributed to Quality Based Production through better maintenance practices.

Chad transitioned from the consulting arena and accepted a plant management position with Oldcastle in late 2000. This challenging role included System Administration, Training and Mentoring, Quality, and Environmental Health and Safety Management responsibilities in a culturally diverse environment for the largest manufacturer of building products in North America. While his success in that role was rewarding Chad realized that he truly missed the consulting work and the diverse vertical exposure and challenges that come with those engagements.

Chad found himself at home in 2003 when he accepted a position with GenesisSolutions. He has worked in multiple role assignments for Genesis ranging from Field Engineer to Project Manager. His skill sets in Engineering Services, Reliability, Validation and Testing, Configuration, and Business Process Re-engineering allow Chad to transition gracefully from pharmaceutical engagements to heavy manufacturing engagements and consistently deliver quality service and focused solutions to his clients.

In April 2011, Chad received Special Recognition from Genesis for his services performed with MedImmune. Chad has initiated improvements in the areas of storeroom management, data accuracy, reliability services, support and technical infrastructure. As a result of his performance, Chad has recently been named the MedImmune Business Owner of the Maximo application.

GenesisSolutions Reliability Project Recap

Pfizer Australia

During the fourth quarter of 2010 GenesisSolutions completed a reliability project for three Pfizer sites in Australia. This effort was targeted at enhancing reliability improvements at each plant by providing focus on:

Reliability Engineering Methodology & Tools

Equipment Changeovers

Mature Asset Maintenance and Support

A number of Pfizer Global Reliability Program (GRP) tools were incorporated into the project in order to continue standardizing on the Pfizer Global Reliability methodology.

Employee Spotlight

Tony Vaclavicek - Manager, Reliability Services (Europe & Middle East)

Tony Vaclavicek started his career in the construction industry with the Steel Workers Union in Brooklyn, New York during the early 1970’s. His career took him to many parts of the US and he settled in Tulsa, Oklahoma where his construction background got him involved with architectural millwork as a cabinet maker. Tony worked through the ranks at several companies before becoming the Plant Superintendent / Production Manager for Millcreek Lumber. Tony’s ability to organize production facilities helped him to design and implement a custom cabinet assembly line for Millcreek producing high end cabinets for the home building industry.

His interest in speeding up the assembly process and eliminating the human factor from processes led him to attend college in the evenings and receive an Associate Degree in Computer Integrated Manufacturing with emphasis in Robotics and Automation.

Tony’s successes in the manufacturing and production space lead to a new position as Production Superintendant and Maintenance Manager at Brunswick’s Zebco division in Tulsa. In this position he managed all warehousing, graphics, assembly, die-casting, injection molding and maintenance for a facility producing trolling motors and fishing reels for the global recreation industry. While at Zebco, Tony completed a BS in Industrial Operations Management from Northeastern State University in Oklahoma.

After Zebco Tony took a Production Engineer position at Whirlpool’s Tulsa Division where he led the implementation of Maximo 3.1 and was promoted to Senior Business Analyst for the global implementation of Maximo 4.1.1 at 14 divisions. Tony assumed management responsibility for all inventory / procurement configuration, an SAP interface, and user acceptance testing and training for over 1,000 maintenance technicians in North America.

In September 2001 Tony came to GenesisSolutions as the training coordinator for the rollout of Maximo 5.1.1 at Abbott in Chicago. Soon thereafter, he led the rollout and SAP interface at the Abbott site in Barceloneta, Puerto Rico. In 2006 Tony moved to the Netherlands to manage a small Technical Integrity Enhancement Project for Shell Oil.

Tony has since been promoted to Manager, Reliability Services - Europe & the Middle East and manages European operations for Genesis Technology Solutions - NL, a division of GenesisSolutions. For the last four years he has been heavily involved with Oil & Gas Safety and Integrity Projects for Shell in the North Sea, Maintenance Optimization projects on two North Sea FPSOs owned by BlueWater, along with several smaller projects for companies such as MedImmune, Oce and Wyeth.

Developing & Implementing a Maintenance Master Plan

by Mike Greenholtz, VP, Reliability Solutions

Maintenance staff are constantly addressing the daily Run the Business needs. In today’s environment of shrinking expense budgets, less capital for baseline equipment and facilities upgrades; coupled with staffing reductions or freezes, the Maintenance organization is already hard pressed for delivering results. Yet, every industry sector is currently looking at “Create the Future” scenarios to transform yesterdays work flow processes into leaner, cost effective customer focused processes.

The blueprint that defines your updated Maintenance organization charter, prioritized objectives and implementation schedule is the Maintenance Master Plan.

New Employee Spotlight: Bob Steibly, Senior Reliability Engineer
Feature Article: MedImmune Project Profile
GenesisSolutions Presents at the 2010 Oil & Gas Maintenance Technology North America Conference
Upcoming September & October 2010 Events

New Employee Spotlight: Bob Steibly

Senior Reliability Engineer

Bob Steibly is a Certified Senior Consultant by the Americas Consultant Certification Board and a Certified Plant Engineer (CPE) by the Association for Facilities Engineers (AFE). His career in maintenance and plant engineering management and in asset care management consulting spans four decades with Sharon Steel Corp., Anheuser-Busch, Baxter International, GE Medical Systems, American Hospital Supply Corporation, GE Aircraft Engines, Indus International, IBM Global Services, and Omya Inc. His plant engineering and maintenance organization at GE Aircraft Engines earned The Best Maintenance Organization in America Award presented by Maintenance Technology magazine and the Facilities Excellence Award of Merit (FAME) presented by the AFE (Association of Facilities Engineers).

In 1993 Bob formed his asset care management consulting firm, Steibly & Associates, specializing in maintenance productivity and asset reliability improvement with clients in virtually every business sector. In 2006, after 13 years of successful asset care management consulting, Bob re-entered the world of maintenance and engineering management with Omya, Inc. to implement the world class practices he brought to his clients since his achievements with GE, developing Omya’s maintenance operation into a highly productive and asset reliability-focused, world class operation. (Omya, Inc. is the world’s largest producer of the finest, fine ground, calcium carbonate in the world).

It is Bob’s philosophy that the key to a productive and successful maintenance operation is a clear focus on equipment reliability supported by a combination of leadership, cultural change, teamwork, planning and scheduling, up-to-date procedures and practices, and ready access to critical information by all levels of maintenance personnel. Success is built on a solid foundation of the basics of good maintenance before moving to the latest technologies. This approach ensures productivity improvements for maintenance and the operations side of the business translating into improved asset reliability.

Bob joined GenesisSolutions in June 2010 as a Senior Reliability Engineer. In this capacity, Bob has been working with one of GenesisSolutions’ key pharmaceutical clients in the development and deployment of asset reliability programs and tools and maintenance productivity improvement programs to the client’s plants worldwide.

Project Profile: MedImmune

What was MedImmune trying to achieve?

The main objective of our engagement was to provide System Administrator support for the current Maximo 5.2 installation while the Facilities Lead / System Administrator was engaged in SAP effort with AstraZeneca. We were also requested to conduct a Maximo 7.1 Upgrade GAP Analysis and Planning project. The system support was fully spearheaded by GenesisSolutions’ Chad Bring and the upgrade analysis and planning was completed by Walter Betsill.

Why GenesisSolutions was selected (i.e. experience, cost, capabilities)?

GenesisSolutions was involved in Validation and Training during the initial Maximo 5.2 implementation along with an MRO Consulting team. During our upgrade discussion in January 2010, MedImmune was very impressed with our understanding of the requirements and the proposed approach, our understanding of the functionality of Maximo 7.1, and our proposed solution to upgrade Maximo 5.2 to 7.1. In addition, we maintained a close relationship for the past 6 - 7 years which played a large role in keeping updated on our customers operations.

What were the results?

GenesisSolutions was selected as the implementation partner for the upgrade project. We have been tasked to streamline the inventory and equipment records, including walk downs at 5 sites (Gaithersburg, Frederick, Pennsylvania, California, and U.K.). We are underway to accomplishing our task on time and to provide quality data to the SAP development team. We have also begun a pilot asset reliability study within the Utility section at Gaithersburg. There are more initiatives that GenesisSolutions will be involved with after this initial pilot study involving both MedImmune and AstraZeneca sites.

GenesisSolutions’ Chad Bring is doing a fantastic job of managing these initiatives along with his System Administrator role. He is instrumental in the success of this project with our valued customer.

About MedImmune

MedImmune, the worldwide biologics unit for AstraZeneca PLC, has approximately 3,300 employees worldwide and is headquartered in Gaithersburg, Maryland.

GenesisSolutions Presents at 2010 Oil & Gas Maintenance Technology North America Conference

GenesisSolutions presented at the 2nd Annual Oil & Gas Maintenance Technology North America 2010 Expo & Conference on September 2, 2010. The presentation, delivered by Tony Vaclavicek, Manager of Reliability Services, Europe, centered on the identification of Safety Critical Elements (SCE) and the establishment of Performance Measurements for these SCE’s on Offshore Production Facilities. The presentation was delivered within the Safety & Asset Integrity session track.

Today there are very few forums for individuals to showcase the methods they are embracing in an effort to leverage the latest technology to optimize their company’s facilities, monitor and lower equipment costs, bench mark key indicators and eliminate costly repairs. This exchange of information is designed to optimize the use of Maximo’s capabilities in the Facilities Environment. The integrated principles of business methods, administration, and practices of architecting, planning, and maintaining buildings, grounds, systems, and quality customer service needs to create optimal work environments. This meeting will be a great opportunity to exchange ideas, share visions, problem-solve, and take home a fresh new look at the best-practices for your organization.

GenesisSolutions is a sponsor of this event.

Employee Spotlight: Russ Mokrouz, Principal Consultant
Featured Article: Change Management, A Starting Point
April 2010 EAM & Maximo Seminars, Meetings & Conferences

Employee Spotlight: Russ Mokrouz, Principal Consultant

Russ Mokrouz, a Principal Consultant with GenesisSolutions, has been exposed to maintenance operations in a unique way since his early years. The son of a USSR supersonic bomber pilot and brother to a Ukrainian fighter pilot, he was frequently on an airfield to observe day-to-day activities of aircraft maintenance and operations. Starting off on his path at the Ukrainian Air Force Academy studying aeronautical engineering, he then was selected to complete his studies at the US Air Force Academy in Colorado Springs, CO.

A career transition to consulting services with GenesisSolutions brought another level of appreciation for implementing technology solutions in support of maintenance business processes improvements. For the past 7 years Russ has been working closely with various customer groups including maintenance supervisors, technicians, inventory personnel, IT, and senior management allowing him to build a broad spectrum of knowledge and expertise necessary to lead complex multi-site EAM / CMMS / CCMS implementations. Pharmaceutical and power industries remained the main focus for Russ over the years. Russ has a diversified skillset ranging from process re-engineering, system configuration and validation, to electronic report writing and the development of automated workflow; as well as user training and technical support. This all adds up to an astute ability to understand our customer’s expectations and to deliver quality solutions.

Russ’ personal goals are to provide a computerized system solution that brings the most value to our customers. Value is measured in time saved on streamlined processes, ease of use, electronic work management, and seamless reporting within the system framework. Aviation aspirations remain a significant part of Russ’ life as he often soars in an aerobatic glider over the green fields of Pennsylvania to the heights of the Arizona mountains.

Change Management - A Starting Point by Tom Terfehr

The mantra in all of our workplaces today is: improve the way we do things. The reasons explained in Chinese, Dutch, Tagalog, English or Spanish are the same: More output with less cost. To get that done means change - organizational change and personal change. So, if change is part of our everyday lives it makes sense to understand how change works and how to make it work for us.

The following tool to understand and manage change has stood the test of time. It was first introduced by Michael Beers more than two decades ago and variations have been used in industry, government and education to guide change management.

Probability of Effective Change = (D*M*P) - (C)

Where:

D = Degree of satisfaction with the status quo

M = Model (picture, vision of changed future)

P = The implementation process

C = Cost (organizational & personal) as measured by time, effort, resources required, etc.

The point is that change can be managed. Let’s take each element of the change process and see how:

“D” - Degree of satisfaction with the status quo - for any change to happen there must be a reason. The stronger the reason the higher the probability is for successful change. That reason could be an outside force such as a new product or service from a competitor, a new or different customer need or a recession that costs a large percentage of our business in one year. The reason could also be an inside force such as a new manager with different ideas, poor quality that is costing money in claims or equipment downtime that impacts customers. The point is: to manage change, you need to find a reason to improve things (the Why) that makes sense to the people who will need to change and then explain it…sometimes over and over again.

“M” - Model or picture, vision of the future - The evidence is clear that people first need to understand the new way of doing things before we can make a decision to change from what we are doing now. So to manage change the “new way” needs to be explained. The benefits should be part of that explanation. Benefits come in the form of less pain (e.g. lost customer orders, regulatory warnings & fines, claims, etc.) or more pleasant things (e.g. higher equipment uptime, on-time shipments, no regulatory incidents, etc.). The point is: to manage change, explain a better way (the What) that makes sense to the people who will need to change and then explain it…again, sometimes over and over again.

“P” - the Implementation Process - Changing to a new way of doing things means that we need a roadmap. One helpful way to create the map is the “start, stop, continue” approach which involves three questions: What do we start doing (that we are not doing now)? What do we stop doing? And, very importantly, what do we continue doing? Change always means building on successes - taking core organizational and people strengths and building on them. The point is: to manage change, explain ways to improve things (the How) that makes sense to the people who will need to change and then explain it…over and over again.

“C” - Cost to change - Every change has a cost. The key question is: Does the gain exceed the pain (cost) of the change? Cost comes in the form of simple things like inconvenience, learning new ways of working or more complicated things such as retraining for a new job, learning to use a new computer system, changing locations to keep a job, etc. There are ways to reduce the cost of change such as training, working in teams to help one another and using expert resources to shorten the learning curve. The point is: to manage change, understand the costs and figure out ways to minimize them that makes sense to the people who will need to change and then explain it…over and over again.

To restate, change can be managed. The approach outlined here is leading edge “change management.” GenesisSolutions has used this approach around the world (language and location do not matter - process does) to help our customers improve reliability, implement new CMMS software, redesign maintenance work management processes, change maintenance organizational structures, complete a corporate merger…and more.
