New Employee Spotlight: Glen Westling, Principal Consultant
Glen Westling, a Principal Consultant with GenesisSolutions, is celebrating his 30th plus year working within the maintenance industry. Glen started his career in the Navy, as an Electrician on a Special Ops Nuclear powered submarine, USS Seawolf SSN 575. During his 6 years with the Navy, he was qualified on the most senior watch stations, above and beyond his rating and was able to gain expert and unique knowledge of maintaining antiquated equipment. He continued to work with nuclear powered submarines at Mare Island Naval Shipyard as a Nuclear Engineering Startup Test Engineer. After that, Glen worked for United Airlines as a mechanic and foreman for the automated baggage handling system. He then transferred to the Jet Engine Overhaul Facility, working on a large variety of complex machines and processes, and managing 60+ maintenance workers. Glen then began his maintenance and supply chain management consulting career in 1997 with IBM Global Services, working with customers in trucking, aviation, manufacturing, rail, higher education, both in North America and Europe.
Glen then took a position with Calpine Power Corporation and within 6 years, advanced to Vice President of Supply Chain Services, where he managed professionals in support of the Enterprise Asset Management and Supply Chain departments. He and his team concentrated on moving disparate power plants to a centralized data system as well as inventory management and procurement process improvements. Calpine also upgraded their Maximo EAM system from version 4 to 6, while establishing corporate level procedures and processes.
Glen is currently working as a Principal Consultant, guiding a manufacturing process client through an upgrade of Maximo 4 to version 7. He also continues to apply his utility and supply chain experience by participating in a team at GenesisSolutions that focuses in that area.
His personal driver is the satisfaction of seeing people succeed and learn. While the tools to assist in the management of maintenance, supply chain and processes continue to improve, the maintenance fundamentals stay constant and can be applied in every industry, along with the key assets in every company, the people.
Integrated MRO Supply Chain Management, A Three Dimensional View by Tom Terfehr
The pressures on suppliers to help their customers improve business performance are enormous in this global economy. Business complexity, cost pressures and ever-increasing quality standards are at the root of these pressures. The ‘extended enterprise’ supply chain model, with a focus on rapid product design, lean manufacturing, and JIT inventories, has proven its effectiveness as a competitive weapon. This is having a major impact on how direct materials (those materials and components that ultimately become part of the product which is sold), are purchased and their suppliers managed. Inventories have been slashed, time required for product design has been reduced, quality has improved, and suppliers and customers find themselves in new and unprecedented roles.
Business pressures and supply chain management are causing firms to also evaluate the world of indirect materials and particularly MRO (maintenance, repair and operating supplies). The path to improved performance in this arena is not, however, so straightforward as with direct materials. At the core, the MRO supply chain exists to support plant operations. The supply system is complex with many, often thousands or tens of thousands, of parts, pieces, suppliers and inventory stockpiles. The amount of annual “spend” for a typical company is significant (15%, or more of total spend). Finally, there are many decision-makers with different agendas who are often not in close communication with each other. The net result of this complexity and lack of coordination is higher cost and service gaps. Achieving lower total cost of ownership for MRO items requires that the following three supply chain dimensions be addressed.
